Hashtags are by far the easiest and most effective way to grow your following on Instagram. Even if you have a small account, you can still reach tens of thousands of users per post! So today I’ve compiled a HUGE list of the best travelling hashtags for Instagram to help you out.

General Tips for Finding the Best Travel Hashtags for Instagram

Before we get started, there’s a few basic guidelines you should follow when building out your list of Instagram hashtags for your travel photos.

The Basics

Use between 20-30 travel hashtags per post. I generally use 30 hashtags and haven’t had any issues, but there’s a rumor that Instagram considers this spammy behavior. If you notice you’re not seeing limited reach with 30, try using 20 tags and see if it improves.

Use tags with ~50k-500k tagged posts. Popular tags with millions of results are crazy competitive. You have a much better chance of standing out in hashtag rankings if you go for smaller tags. Look for active hashtags with one new post every 3-5 minutes or so.

Put tags in a comment instead of your caption. This is a matter of personal preference, but I think it looks spammy to plop 20-30 hashtags in your caption. I always write mine out in a Notes entry, then copy-paste them into a comment after I post.

Switch up your hashtag sets per post. If you use the same sets of tags over and over again, Instagram will flag you as spam and suppress your posts. I recommend rotating hashtag sets for every single post, and adding at least 5 unique, image-specific tags per post.

Finding the Right Tags

Use the Instagram tag search feature to find relevant and popular travelling hashtags. Once you find a good hashtag (between 50k-500k posts, roughly) – check out the related hashtags in the top bar. There are usually some great suggestions for hashtags with similar competition + volume that you can use.

Pick niche tags that describe your account. If you’re a solo traveler, go for inspirational solo travel hashtags. If you love vacationing, go for vacation hashtags. If you’re a luxury traveler, use luxury travel hashtags… you get the idea. These will ensure that your account gets exposed to the right audience.

Use feature or brand tags to get featured + get extra exposure. Lots of Instagram pages post features only and NO original photos. Some of them have hundreds of thousands of followers (or more!) and a feature can bring you a ton of new followers. The hashtags themselves tend to be very active and frequently liked, so using them is a bonus even if you don’t end up getting a feature.

Use 5-10 hashtags specific to the location of your post. Tag the city you’re in, the restaurant you went to, describe your activity, etc. Instagram looooves when you use specific hashtags.

PS: If you want to grow on Instagram, improving your photography is a HUGE step in the right direction.

I’d advise investing in some camera equipment, first off. I would suggest a mirrorless camera like the highly-rated Panasonic Lumix – it’s lightweight, affordable, and a great choice for beginners. I use the Canon 6D but TBH it’s way too bulky for travel.

The next best thing you can do is get yourself Adobe Lightroom. This editing software will CHANGE YOUR LIFE, it opens up a whole new world of color editing.
